Family Show at Banbury's Mill Theatre

The curtain goes up this week on Banbury's eagerly-awaited, family show for the post Christmas season - The Snow Queen - at the Mill Theatre.

The classic Hans Christian Anderson tale has been especially adapted for this Cherwell Theatre Company production by film and TV actor, playwright and director Nasser Memarzia.

It is the latest in a string of highly successful stage shows providing colourful, imaginative and action-packed spectacle from a company that famously mixes local young thespians with experienced, professional actors and theatre practitioners.

"The Snow Queen is a wonderful story for winter; of frozen lands and heart-warming bravery. It illustrates the unconditional friendship and loyalty between the two children," said Mr Memarzia.

"The story is just not as well-known as it deserves to be. There are some film and TV adaptations of it with regrettably shallow interpretations.  

"The original story is as rich in imagery and content as any of the treasured classics such as Alice in Wonderland. For me, this makes the production all the more exciting; it feels as if we are rediscovering a shining gem.

"Our production offers a unique opportunity for anyone to enjoy a fabulous night at the theatre. It will appeal to all the family; it's colourful and spectacularly designed and the cast are just amazing.

"We are blending live action, stunning puppetry, projection, a haunting musical score and magical imagery to charm audiences of all ages."

In the story, an evil mirror shatters into millions of tiny pieces. Shards fly out and pierce hearts all over the world.

One of the young victims, Kai, is swept away to the Snow Queen's frozen palace and kept there as her captive.

Yet, of course, there is always hope and Kai's faithful friend Gerda determines to find and rescue him - at any cost.

Cherwell Theatre Company enjoys a reputation for excellent adaptations, lively shows and innovative staging. Last year's presentation - Arabian Nights - an Alice in Wonderland in 2008 received excellent reviews and helped the company crystallize its position as one of the UK's most exciting up-and-coming professional theatre outfits.

The Snow Queen is set to be another unforgettable theatre experience and runs until January 23, in matinee and evening performances; suitable for those from five-years-old upwards.
